New Restaurants – Mayor – Athens
Written by Lena Harizopoulos
This winter there has been a foodgasm of openings in Athens and it seems that the restaurant scene will continue surprising us in Spring both in Athens and the islands.
Mayor at Kolonaki square is a new entry – a very pleasant, all-day lifestyle restaurant with a great long wooden bar, old school bartenders and a spacious patio at the back of the restaurant.
The front part of the dining is very atmospheric during week days with great chill out music, nice cocktails and a people watching crowd.
During the day and the weekends I have to admit that it is not that people-watching and you kind of have the wrong mix of people.
Menu wise although Mayor is on its second week of running, I have discovered a couple of gems within its menu like the poached cod – a dish that is cooked to perfection – the cod is finely poached, its texture is smooth and refined, the after taste is indeed engaging not like most similar dishes that you end up with a tasteless piece of fish feeling hungry in the end.
The tuna tartare with the quinoa salad is ok – it just needs to become more substantial even when served as a starter, satisfactory was also the risotto with zafferano and shrimps and last but not least the bucatini al bolognese were delicious and rather light.
Th salmon dish is nothing to write home about and we are looking forward this week for a brunch tasting along with a burger and meat report.
